1. University of Toronto

2. McGill University

1813年James McGill去世时捐出一万英镑和46英亩的土地用来成立皇家高等学院, 这便是后来举世闻名的麦基尔大学. 麦基尔是加拿大唯一一所能与University of Toronto相提并论的大学. 麦基尔地处讲法语的Montreal中英语区的中心, 不但拥有大量的国际学生, 而且很多世界上的知名学者也慕名而来. 当年大物理学家卢瑟福便是在麦基尔发现了原子的结构, 使麦基尔在欧美声名大噪. 同时麦基尔的医学院在加拿大首屈一指, 是无数学子梦寐以求的地方. 麦基尔的学术研究水平之高可与美国长春藤盟校媲美. 然而近二十年来由于魁北克的独立运动造成Toronto的崛起而使Montreal沦为加拿大第二大城市, 麦基尔的发展也深受影响. 不过麦基尔的辉煌历史和学术上的非凡成就, 使她长期以来获得了加拿大的哈佛之美名.

3. University of Waterloo

滑铁庐大学自从1959年成立, 仅数十年时间便挤身加拿大名校行列, 是加拿大发展最快的学校. 滑铁庐在成立之初便把重点放在新兴的电脑行业上, 并罕见地成立了数学学院(Faculty of Math)来发展她的Computer Science. 飞速发展的数学学院及所属的电脑系不仅带动了其他如工学院在高科技领域的投入, 而且为滑铁庐在电脑行业赢得了别人无法相比的声誉. 滑铁庐最为人称道的成就是她创立的co-op program让电脑系学生在学习的同时有机会在IBM, Nortel, Bell等著名公司获得工作经验, 现在已经为美加大学相竞效仿. 近十多年滑铁庐的电脑本科毕业生极为抢手, 各大公司排着队聘请. 微软公司优先录取毕业生的八所美国大学和五所加拿大大学中, 滑铁庐名列榜首. 多年来在微软工作的滑铁庐毕业生比其他任何北美大学都多. 然而, 滑铁庐虽然在电脑软件业执牛耳, 在传统工业上却比较弱, 而且缺乏成为国际一流大学所必须的医学院, 商学院和法学院等, 毕竟她还是一所年轻大学. 不过滑铁庐的出色成就已经使她成为北美电脑工业的第一宠儿.

4. McMaster University

麦马斯达大学的历史最早可追溯到1830年代.当时的参议员William McMaster捐款成立一所"基督徒学习的学校", 在1887年正式成为麦马斯达大学. 麦马斯达是一所中型大学, 以研究著称. 学校教师中拥有博士学位的比例是全加拿大最高的. 学校还拥有国际一流的实验室和各种先进的设施, 是北美仅有的少数拥有自己核发应堆的大学之一. 这些都保证了教师和学生有一个完善的研究环境. 麦马斯达著名的研究成果不计其数, 包括美国第一架航天飞机哥伦比亚号表面的抗热贴片等等. 有不少国际上数一数二知名教授任职的工学院中八个系中的任何一个系放到美国, 都可以在美国排名该学科前十位. 不但传统工业如能源, 材料, *(北美第一), 机械等在加拿大首屈一指, 而且高科技领域如数字通讯和电脑硬件等也是北美领先. 麦马斯达同时还拥有在加拿大唯一能与McGill媲美的医学院, 以及一流的商学院. 但是麦马斯达有一大缺憾是从未成立过法学院, 这在加拿大传统名校中是绝无仅有的. 由于麦马斯达一百多年来在工业界声名卓著, 经常被美国同行和工业界称作加拿大的MIT.

5. Queen''s University

1841年, Thomas Liddell受苏格兰教会委托携带皇家特许来到Kington创立Queen''s College, 这就是皇后大学的前身. 皇后大学在加拿大是极受尊重的大学, 以优异的教学质量和多姿多彩的历史而闻名. 其中最值得一提的历史事件当属1938年罗斯福总统在这里接受荣誉学位时发表的那篇著名的保证加拿大不受纳粹侵犯的演说. 皇后大学的教学质量在加拿大无出其右者, 一直受到各行各业的广泛好评. 笔者曾与一国际知名教授谈到加拿大的大学, 他认为在加拿大皇后大学是最注重教学的学校, 而McMaster最注重研究, 其他名校介于两者之间. 学校规模不大, 拥有加拿大一流的商学院和医学院, 没有工学院但有应用科学学院. 理工科中的工程物理专业为加拿大第一, 该专业在北美也仅次于Princeton和Cornell而排名第三. 她的人文艺术, 教育学, 法律等都是非常有名. 皇后大学在学术上一直保持着很高的水准, 与University of Toronto和McGill University一起并称加拿大长春藤. 虽然没有特别突出的专业(如Western的MBA, Waterloo的Computer Science等), 但总体来说皇后大学几乎找不出任何缺点. 极高的教学质量和学术水平常让皇后大学学生自豪地把他们的母校比作加拿大的普林斯顿.

6. University of Western Ontario

西安大略大学成立于1878年, 现已成为加拿大最大的大学之一. 学校比较偏重人文艺术方面的学科, 最出名的是商学院. 她的MBA不论是在加拿大国内还是国际上都是极为抢手. 有加拿大著名杂志曾经做过统计后宣称如果西安大略大学的MBA打一百分的话, 那么加拿大其他所有学校包括U. of Toronto, McGill, McMaster, UBC, Queen''s的MBA最多只得四十多分. 当然这样比较略显偏颇, 但也从另一面反映了西安大略大学MBA的过人之处. 西安大略大学的其他人文专业如政治社会学, 心理学都非常有名. 她的医学院也是加拿大一流. 学校重视文科, 没有单独的工学院但设有理工学院. 工程方面有不少先进设备, 但总体实力略逊. 一般来说人们一提起西安大略大学, 总是和她的商学院和MBA联系在一起. 西安大略大学是国际公认的MBA巨擘.

7. University of British Columbia

1908年, McGill University所属的麦基尔大学卑诗学院依据卑诗省议会通过的法律改称卑诗大学, 西岸名校卑诗大学正式成立. 今天的卑诗大学已经成为规模仅次于University of Toronto和McGill Univerisity的加拿大第三大的大学. 大学坐落于美丽的花园城市温哥华西面的半岛上, 是北美最漂亮的校园. 卑诗大学很多年以来一直是广大西部地区仅有的一所能与安魁两省众多名校相抗衡的学校. 学校提供的专业和课程非常广泛, 很多学科如生物等在加拿大甚至世界上均属一流. 所有的工程方面的专业全部集中在应用科学学院. 学生课程的深度往往不如东部名校, 但毕业所需修习的课程数目一般更多, 这更有利于学生选择适合自己的专业方向. 然而卑诗大学远离加拿大政治经济中心的安魁两省, 不像那里的学校在获得商业界和工业界的支持上近水楼台. 不过另一方面, 卑诗大学优越的地理位置和一流的学术环境不但吸引了加拿大西部省份的众多学子, 而且深受亚洲学生欢迎. 卑诗大学是加拿大西海岸一颗闪亮的明珠.

8. University of Alberta

以上是依据笔者经验对加拿大八所公认名校的简单介绍. 这些学校中的任何一个在美国都有能力进入前二十五名. 而最有名的University of Toronto和McGill University甚至有实力可排北美前十名. 当然这并不意味着年年都要排第几名, 只是有这个竞争力而已. 上述八所学校的毕业生受到工商界的广泛欢迎, 甚至在经济萧条时有些大公司如IBM, Procter & Gamble也不肯放弃到这些学校招人. 当然加拿大还有其他学校的有些专业也都很有名, 如University of Guelph的农业, York University的商科等. 另外加拿大还有很不错的法语大学如Universite de Montreal. 总的说来加拿大的大学之间差别不像美国那样大, 找不到滥竽充数的学校, 总体教育水平在北美很受好评.
